The Treadmill Test (TMT), also known as a Cardiac Stress Test or Exercise Stress Test, is a common and important test used to evaluate how the heart performs during physical activity.Since exercise makes the heart work harder and pump faster, a TMT helps doctors see how well the heart responds to stress and if there are any signs of coronary artery disease (CAD) or poor blood flow.
🔍 Purpose of TMT
Doctors recommend a TMT to:
Detect blockages or reduced blood supply to the heart.
Evaluate chest pain, breathlessness, or palpitations.
Assess heart rhythm and blood pressure changes during exercise.
Monitor recovery after a heart attack or heart surgery.
Determine fitness level before starting an exercise program.
Check the effectiveness of cardiac treatment or medication.
⚙️ How the Test is Done.
1.Preparation:
Electrodes are placed on your chest to record your heart’s electrical activity (ECG). Your blood pressure and heart rate are also monitored.
2.Exercise Phase:
You will walk on a treadmill that gradually increases speed and incline every few minutes. This helps simulate increasing levels of physical stress on your heart.
3.Monitoring:
Throughout the test, ECG readings, pulse rate, and blood pressure are recorded to check for any irregularities or discomfort.
4.Recovery:
After stopping the exercise, your heart activity is monitored until your pulse and blood pressure return to normal.
