The High Dependency Unit (HDU) is a specialized hospital area that provides close monitoring and care for patients who are seriously ill but do not require full intensive care support. It serves as an intermediate step between the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and the general ward. Patients admitted to the HDU may have recently undergone major surgery, experienced acute illness, or are recovering from critical conditions that need continuous observation.
The HDU is equipped with advanced monitoring systems, oxygen support, infusion pumps, and other essential medical equipment to track vital parameters such as heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and respiration. The unit ensures that patients receive one-to-one or one-to-two nursing care, allowing for early detection of any deterioration in their condition.
An ECG is one of the quickest and simplest tests to check the heart’s health. It helps:A dedicated team of physicians, nurses, and respiratory therapists provides 24×7 care to patients in the HDU. Common cases managed include post-surgical patients, those with respiratory distress, cardiac problems, or sepsis who no longer need intensive care but still require frequent monitoring. The HDU also plays an important role in early recovery and rehabilitation, providing pain management, oxygen therapy, and nutritional support.
